Zhejiang University (ZJU), founded in 1897, is located in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is a comprehensive national key University under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education and under the direct administration of the central government at the vice-ministerial level. It was once known as the "Oriental Cambridge" and is listed in the "211 Project", "985 Project" and "Double First-Class" key construction universities. The university has been selected into the "Mount Everest Plan", "2011 Plan", "Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Plan", "Excellent Engineer Education and Cultivation Plan", "Excellent Doctor Education and Cultivation Plan", "Excellent Legal Talents Education and Cultivation Plan", "Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Talents Education and Cultivation Plan" and "State-sponsored Postgraduate Program of National Construction of High-level University". It is the host institution of Chinese government scholarship for international students and one of the first national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform.
Founded in 1897 as Qiushi Academy, Zhejiang University was renamed Zhejiang University in 1950 after the establishment of Qiushi College, Zhejiang Higher School, National Third Sun Yat-sen University, Zhejiang University of the Republic of China, and National Zhejiang University. In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, Zhejiang University became one of the first batch of institutions granting doctoral and master's degrees in China. In 1998, the former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University were merged to form the new Zhejiang University.
